Architect: Harry Wharton Ford, 1914. District and Circle Lines
The station, originally called Charing Cross, was opened in 1870 as part of the original District Line along the Thames embankment. The Bakerloo Line opened in 1906 and the Northern Line in 1914. The surface station was designed by Harry Ford in a neo-classical style and remains mostly intact.
